In this groundbreaking new production created by an all-Japanese and Japanese American creative team, Madame Butterfly’s story is framed from a bold new point of view, seen through the fantastical realm of virtual reality that allows fact and fiction to blur. With some of the most breathtaking music in all of opera, you’ll follow the passionate journey of Japanese geisha Cio-Cio-San and her fleeting romance with the American naval officer, Pinkerton—and feel the heartbreak as she awaits his return with unwavering faith.
But is it all merely a fantasy? Witness the power dynamics at play as this beloved story unfolds, revealing the consequences of careless desire and the enduring strength of the human spirit in a poignant exploration of love, sacrifice, betrayal, and the complexities of the human heart.
This new production is co-produced by Utah Opera, Cincinnati Opera, Detroit Opera, and Pittsburgh Opera.
Rating: Rated PG-13 for mature themes.
