Spring Fever — a celebration of the resurgence of life!
Join us for a welcoming of spring through a string concert on the Veena.
This ancient Indian lute that has been a carrier of Carnatic (or South Indian) classical music over the millennia is itself a striking symbol of sustenance and rejuvenation.
Nitya Nritya Foundation is proud to present a concert by Kapila and Sushruta Chandramouli, siblings who represent the 11th generation of musicians in the famed Karaikudi lineage of musicians. They will be joined by Jagadeesh Jayaprakash on the Mridaganam.
The Karaikudi Veena tradition (bani) is the only living musical tradition from the South of India with a familial lineage extending to eleven generations. The origin of the Karaikudi Veena bani approximately dates back to the South Indian courts of the early 1700s, in particular of Pudukottai. This unbroken tradition is remarkable for its continuance given that India was subject to British colonial rule in the 1800s and political turmoil from prior to the formal take-over political power. This was period of impoverishments of courts and lack of patronage to the arts. Today, having traversed this tumultuous time, the Karaikudi tradition thrives all over the world, including in Portland, OR; where Kapila and Sushruta are from.
