Kaladharaa Dance was established to preserve and promote Indian Classical Dance styles primarily one form called ‘Kathak’, from North India. Its Mission is to enable cultural awareness, making dance accessible, inclusive & relevant. The only Kathak company based in SLC. Through innovative performances, classes and arts in – education programs we strive to encourage the growth of the classical arts in the US. Engaging & rich performances, thereby increasing the appreciation & accessibility of these timeless arts.
The production is a celebration of the sacred rivers of India and her history, through four different Indian classical dance forms. Rivers have, for ages, been poet’s muse. Poets have always been delighted and have taken great comfort in the bounties of nature. This unique production takes us on an immersing journey, connecting and portraying the mythological stories associated with these rivers.
The dancers also portray the Cultural and Religious Significance of praying to these rivers. For example, Rivers like the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati are considered sacred in Hinduism. Rituals such as bathing, offerings, and festivals (e.g., Kumbh Mela) revolve around these rivers.
The story of River Ganga will be performed in Kathak style of Dance by Sonali Loomba & Group (Utah), River Brahmaputra in Odissi Style of Dance by Dr. Aparupa Chatterjee & Group (New Jersey) , River Kaveri in Bharatnatyam Style of Dance by Yashaswini P. Raghuram & Arshia Rajeshnarayanan (Portland),
River Yamuna in Kuchipudi style of Dance by Dr. Pranamya Suri (Denver) & River Narmada in Bharatnatyam Style of Dance by Divya Narayanan & Manya Nair (Utah).
The beautifully evocative dances will be performed to hymns in varied Indian languages such as Sanskrit, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, all set to beautiful music and merged into the rivers on the stage in a harmonious confluence.
Run time: ~90 minutes.
Recommended for all ages. All patrons require a ticket including infants being held or children seated in laps.
