The Salt Lake Children’s Choir
presents
45th Anniversary Celebration with Wendy Bryn Harmer
Saturday, June 7th, 2025 at 7:30pm
Maurice Abravanel Hall
Salt Lake City, Utah
On sale: 2/13/2025 at 10am.
We are pleased to showcase Metropolitan Opera soprano (and former choir member), Wendy Bryn Harmer. She is largely known for her standout performances on major opera stages of the world but is also a much sought after recitalist. Her solo performance will include gripping songs by Richard Strauss and Ralph Vaughan-Williams. Incidentally, Ms. Harmer is already familiar to Salt Lake audiences through her remarkable portrayal of Senta in Wagner’s ‘Flying Dutchman,’ and just last year, her acclaimed solo soprano performance with the Utah Symphony in Ravel’s ‘Scheherzade.’
The choir, itself will present several songs by immortal masters- including ‘To Music,” by Franz Schubert (which Ms. Hamer says she first encountered while a member of the children’s choir), along with works of Robert Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn, and Sergei Rachmaninoff. Also heard will be powerful ‘Blagoslovi dushé moyá Ghòspoda’ by Russian master, Pavel Chesnokov, an arrangement of the exciting ‘Dancing Song’ by brilliant Hungarian composer and pedagogue, Zoltán Kodály, and the sentimental Viennese favorite, “wien, du Stadt Meiner Traume’ by Rúdolf Scieczysky.
Moving from the European tradition, the choir will perform its own arrangement of the popular First Nation song, ‘Zuni Sunrise’ and the rhythmically captivating ‘Guararé from Panama- followed by its own multi-faceted composition, ‘Calypso Loco.’ Jazz pianist extraordinaire (and longtime friend of the choir), Steve Keen will join the choir in their arrangement of the American standard, ‘On the Sunny Side of the Street,’
To conclude the program, a 100-voice choir of former members will perform settings of three traditional works. This will be followed by all performers including Ms. Harmer in singing the choir’s customary spring finale, ‘A Day in Spring.’
This event promises to be a most rewarding experience for all!
Run time: 1 hour 45 minutes minutes including 15 minute intermission.
